The Manager of Patient Safety will have primary oversight of the facility-wide patient safety program. This leadership role will direct others within the facility towards process improvements to support the reduction of medical/health care errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. This practitioner provides leadership for safety assessments, coordinates the activities of the patient safety function or committee, educates other practitioners on the system-based cause for medical errors, consults with management and staff, and communicates literature-based ideas regarding effective patient safety strategies to others within the organization. This role collaborates with executive leadership, medical staff, quality leaders, risk management, and clinical operations to foster a culture of safety, ensure regulatory compliance, reduce preventable harm, and drive continuous performance improvement.
Responsibilities
Patient Safety
- Promote a culture of safety and high reliability
- Reviews and closes all Safety Events reported in the event reporting system
- Escalates events meeting criteria to facility, market, and corporate leadership
- Investigates patient safety issues within the facility using a system's based approach
- Verifies all Safety Events are routed to the appropriate department leaders for review
- Notifies Risk Management of potential risk issues
- Serves as the subject matter expert for patient safety standards, review of patient safety events, and the development of corrective action plans to prevent recurrence
- Facilitate root cause analyses (RCAs), apparent cause analyses (ACAs)/intense analyses (IA), and failure mode and effects analyses (FMEAs)
- Ensure timely identification of trends and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor effectiveness of action plans and sustainability of improvements
- Lead initiatives focused on high reliability, zero harm, and culture of safety
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of corrective action plans
- Facilitate market patient safety committees and governance structures
- Identify opportunities to improve patient safety and reduce organizational risk.
- Utilize data analytics to prioritize activities and resource allocation.
- Lead special projects and strategic initiatives related to quality, safety, and compliance.
- Collaborate with quality, risk management, accreditation and regulatory compliance, infection prevention, and clinical operations leaders to address safety or compliance risks.
- Coordinate audits and tracers related to patient safety, risk assessments
- Coordinate with Market Director, Patient Safety in the sharing of best practices across facilities
Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or higher in a patient care related field.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of combined experience in clinical practice and progressive healthcare leadership experience
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 2 years of experience in Patient Safety, Quality, Risk Management, or healthcare operations
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: CPPS Certification or eligible to take the exam within one year of employment

- Strong leadership, project management, and change management skills.
