Who We Are
Job Summary
PRN ROTATE
The Nuclear Med Tech is under minimal supervision, performs basic Nuclear Medicine procedures, as requested by a licensed physician. Exercises professional judgment in providing healthcare services, to assist in diagnosis or treatment of patients in all age groups from newborn to elderly. Is skilled in the area of Nuclear Medicine. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
General Functions:
- Produces high quality diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine equipment
- Evaluates images for technical quality, assuring proper identification and procedure is recorded.
- Assists practitioner with the operation of radiation detection equipment
- Practices aseptic techniques as necessary, understands methods of venipuncture and other sterile techniques, in agreement with state statures and/or where institutional policy permits, prepares, identifies and/or administers radioactive materials as prescribed by a licenses practitioner
- Practices and enforces those measures that will provide for the physical comfort and safety of patients, visitors, and members of the health care team
Department/Business Unit Functions:
- Provides radiation safety to minimize exposure to patient, patient’s family, by following policies and procedures of the Nuclear Medicine department and federal and state agencies
- Provides communication to patient for instructions and history in order to obtain desired results/ by gaining cooperation and minimizing anxiety
- Assumes responsibility for provision of physical safety and psychological needs of the patient during procedures
- Positions patient to best demonstrate anatomical areas of interest as requested, by respecting patient’s ability, comfort and safety
- Order radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine procedures and prepares them for injection, ingestion or inhalation
- Identifies radioactive substance to complete procedures and calculate activity
- Implements protective measures to prevent patient injury due to thermal, electrical, mechanical, laser, chemical, and radiation sources
- Provides practical instruction, evaluation and precepting for students and/or other healthcare professionals
- Assumes responsibility for assigned areas, quality control of equipment and reports equipment malfunction
- Initiates anecdotal incident, radio-pharmaceutical agent variance and accident report in a timely manner
- Process and files films as needed
- Schedules and transports patients as needed
- Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
- Maintains safe environment
- Addresses patient population-specific needs
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities
Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of Nuclear Medicine
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years in Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Possession of current registry or registry eligible with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), in Nuclear Medicine, or the CNMT. Current Texas Medical Board (TMB) license.
REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): Must have active healthcare provider Basic Life Support on hire (ARC or AHA); however, must have AHA Healthcare Provider BLS within 60 days of hire.
